Following his dismissal from Missouri, Mauk ended up at Eastern Kentucky. He was primed for a big 2016, and his body was feeling good. He had spent the offseason strengthening the muscles around the labrum.
Then, in his first game at Purdue, he took a hit to the shoulder that knocked him out of the game in the first quarter. He sat out the next week and returned to play in the season’s third week against Ball State. He took another hit, this one not just knocking his shoulder out of place but causing his head to hit the turf.
And he hit the turf hard.
Mauk finished the game in pain but with a solid stat line, completing 19 of 32 passes for 285 yards and a touchdown.
“I knew it was bad at that point.” Mauk said. “I played through the rest of the game. If you look at the tape, towards the end of the game, I was getting into my groove and making me throws.”
Thirty minutes after the game, he started to feel a wooziness and told the training staff. Mauk went through the protocol, where it was determined he had a concussion. He was done for the season and ended up having shoulder surgery in November.
