The failed DeMarcus Cousins pursuit shows why Jeanie Buss fired her brother as Lakers VP

Los Angeles Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss had already decided to fire her brother and vice president Jim Buss, along with general manager Mitch Kupchak, days before the Feb. 23 trade deadline. But the botched handling of a potential DeMarcus Cousins trade reinforced her belief and confirmed her decision to promote Magic Johnson as the team’s president of basketball operations, according to ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne.

Florida State running back Dalvin Cook would probably admit the combine didn’t go how he expected. He also had a relatively short vertical, and didn’t put up great numbers in the broad jump, three-cone, or shuttle drill. But that doesn’t erase his play at Florida State, where he looked all the part of a first-round lock and the best back in the draft.

Value the combine and what it offers, but don’t overvalue it. Are there winners and losers? Of course, but the opinion on a player shouldn’t change 180 degrees based on working out.

Josh McCown: The Cowboys are meeting with Josh McCown, as Dallas will need a backup for Dak Prescott with Romo leaving.

These other guys: Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, EJ Manuel, Blaine Gabbert, Geno Smith, and Mark Sanchez all remain on the market, and the best-case scenario is that they’ll get snapped up by teams in need of an experienced backup quarterback.

The 49ers will also be in the market for a backup quarterback, since the signing of Hoyer leaves the Niners with precisely one quarterback on the roster, total. General manager John Lynch spoke highly of DeShone Kizer and Deshaun Watson during the combine, so pulling in a rookie backup through the draft is also a possibility.

When free agency officially begins on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, some of these quarterbacks will quickly find new homes, as the Browns, Jets, Texans, Bears, and Broncos are all still in need of starting quarterbacks.16
